How to Restore and Care for Cashmere Clothes?

How to Restore and Care for Cashmere Clothes?

Clean Up Pills

Knitwear that is made of natural fibers can pill or make fluffy fibers in friction areas — under arms, inner side of thighs, or in the area where you carry a bag. In order to get rid of pills, you can use a razor blade, a special tape, or a special device.

Don’t Wash Your Clothes After Each Wear

If you have spent a day without stains, spills, or sweat, hold your horses to wash or take your cashmere clothes to the dry cleaners. You can wear it a few more times. It is recommended to wash cashmere clothes after approximately three wears. However, you can wear it even more under the condition of airing clothes after each time (if it is necessary — use a refreshing spray).

Go Easy On Dry Cleaning

Many cashmere items are marked with a mark «dry clean only» because the yarn is very delicate. But dry cleaning eventually damages and destroys the fibers. Cashmere is made from mountain goats’ fuzz, and it, as well as human hair, becomes fluffier and shinier after washing. Therefore, it is better to wash cashmere items by hand.

Don't make mistakes while washing

Hand washing for cashmere items is always the best choice. But if you still decide to use a washing machine, don’t forget to turn the clothes inside out, put them in a laundry bag, and select the delicate washing mode without spinning. Moreover, you should rinse clothes by hand. Cashmere lovers also suggest soaking items for 20 minutes to get them fluffy.

During the washing keep two things in mind:

  • Make sure that the water is cold and its temperature isn’t exceeding more than 30 degrees. Any kind of heat shrinks the cashmere, so the perfect temperature is 20 degrees.

  • Use only mild detergents, organic baby shampoos, or special wool detergents.

Dry Cashmere Items Properly

Cashmere is the most delicate when the fibers are wet, so it requires more care at this stage. Unfortunately, wet cashmere dries for several days, so you need to be very patient. The main rule is not to twist the items! If you want to squeeze excess water, put an item on a dry towel and gently roll it up. When the towel has absorbed as much water as possible, roll it out, straighten it out, and lay the item in a shady location to dry. It is worth remembering that heat shrinks cashmere, so dry it only in the air, without dryers.

Store Cashmere Correctly

You can store cashmere items both by putting them carefully on shelves or hanging them on hangers, but remember that they should be soft. At the end of each season don’t forget to wash and dry cashmere clothes, according to the recommendations stated above.

Stains Removing Life Hacks

It is recommended not to use hot water or harsh detergents to remove stains. If you need to remove grease stains — use talcum powder. You need to sprinkle it on the stain, give it time to absorb the grease, and then shake off the remains. You can repeat it several times until the stain completely disappears. It is better to remove red wine with salt, and tea stains with ammonia.
